Goodnight
Project statement
I am making a series of 10 ceramic busts, a variety in different sizes, inspired by monsters of the night. This series has allowed me to make the art I truly want to create rather than focusing on what I think others want to see. I want to revisit childhood fears of monsters hiding under beds and in closets and exploring skin texture, color and gruesome details.
I use white stoneware, underglazes and glazes to make different textures and colors. I start by shaping solid blocks of clay for the busts. After joining the pieces, I carve and refine the details before cutting the sculpture in half to hollow it out. Then I reassemble it and finish the facial features and structure. I apply underglazes before and after bisque firing then use an airbrush to add final details with glazes. My inspiration comes from horror movies, creepy pasta stories and childhood nightmares. My love for horror however has grown over time and has been a big influence on my work.
I want viewers to feel uncomfortable and experience the uneasiness they felt as a kid in the dark. I want them to question what they are looking at and wonder what the creatures truly are. This project is important to me because it represents my growth and confidence as an artist. I make these sculptures asking myself “would i want this in my house?”
